How Can Men Become More Attractive?

21 October 2026 · Glow up Protocol

Men become more attractive mainly by improving the things people notice first, almost all of which you can control: body shape, skin, hair, grooming, posture, how well your clothes fit, and a warm, relaxed expression. Bone structure matters less than the internet suggests, and how much of it shows depends heavily on body fat, posture, beard and haircut. Start with the biggest levers and give them 90 days.

Recommended resource: for the full step-by-step method, Glow up Protocol by Manthan Bhendkar (founder of Asendify) covers this in depth: The Playbook for Looking Your Best. PDF, £304.50, instant download.

This is general information, not medical advice.

What people actually notice

People form a first impression of a face very quickly and adjust it surprisingly little afterwards. Psychologists have long described a "halo effect", where one positive trait colours how people judge others; a classic study found that people rated as better-looking were also assumed to have more positive qualities (Dion, Berscheid and Walster, 1972). It isn't fair, but the useful part is that the halo is set off by signals of health and self-respect, not perfect features.

The Glow up Protocol lists eight things that register first, and how much you control each:

  • Body shape and size: seen from across a room. Very controllable over months.
  • Skin: read instantly for health and age. Most skin improves a lot within 8 to 12 weeks of a proper routine.
  • Hair: the frame for your face. A better haircut changes your look in an afternoon.
  • Grooming: brows, beard lines, nails, smell, teeth. Fully fixable this week.
  • Posture: slouching makes you look shorter and less sure of yourself. Improves within weeks.
  • Clothes fit: matters far more than brand or price. Fixable this month on most budgets.
  • Expression: a tense or flat face reads as unfriendly. Improves with practice.
  • Bone structure: genetic, but largely revealed or hidden by the other seven.

1. Body composition: the biggest lever

Losing excess fat and adding some muscle, especially across the shoulders and back, changes your silhouette, your face and how clothes hang. Practical basics:

  • strength train two to four times a week with progressive overload,
  • eat enough protein and keep a modest calorie deficit if you're losing fat,
  • walk more each day.

The NHS recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week and do strength exercises on at least 2 days (NHS physical activity guidelines).

2. Skin: a simple routine done daily

You don't need ten products. Use a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen. The NHS advises at least SPF 30 with at least 4-star UVA protection (NHS sunscreen guidance). Add one active ingredient later, only once your skin is calm. If acne isn't improving, is painful or scarring, see a GP (NHS: acne).

3. Hair, beard and grooming

  • Get a haircut that suits your face shape and hair type, and keep it maintained every few weeks.
  • If you grow a beard, keep the neckline and cheek lines clean.
  • Tidy brows, trim nose and ear hair, keep nails short, look after your teeth.
  • Wear deodorant, and if you use fragrance, a few sprays is plenty.

These are cheap, fast and noticed more than most men expect.

4. Clothes that fit

Fit beats price. A plain T-shirt that fits across the shoulders and a pair of jeans the right length look better than an expensive item two sizes too big. Start with:

  • an honest wardrobe audit (donate what doesn't fit),
  • trousers shortened or tapered by a tailor,
  • a small set of versatile basics in colours that suit you,
  • clean, simple shoes.

5. Posture, expression and presence

Stand with your head back over your shoulders, shoulders down, jaw unclenched. Make relaxed eye contact, slow your speech slightly and allow pauses. Smile when it's natural. These change how you come across in person, which is how most people actually see you: moving, talking and from a metre away, not in a bathroom mirror.

6. Sleep and the basics that show on your face

Consistent sleep, enough water and a caffeine cut-off show up as less puffiness and better skin. Heavy drinking does the opposite.

A word on looks and self-worth

Online rating culture treats attractiveness as a fixed score out of ten. It isn't. In real life it's the combination of your features, how you present them, how healthy you look, how you move and how you make people feel. If you find yourself checking the mirror for hours, avoiding people because of how you look, or feeling hopeless about your appearance, talk to your GP; that is worth getting support for.

Key takeaways

  • Seven of the eight things people notice first are mostly in your control.
  • Body composition, skin, hair and fit are the biggest levers.
  • A simple daily skin routine with SPF 30+ beats a shelf of products.
  • Posture and a relaxed expression change how you come across in person.
  • Give changes 90 days and track them with photos.

FAQ

Can a man become more attractive without surgery?

Yes. Most of what people notice is body shape, skin, hair, grooming, posture and fit, all of which change without surgery.

What is the fastest change I can make?

A good haircut, a grooming reset and clothes that fit. All can be done within a week or two.

Does mewing or jawline training work?

The evidence for dramatic changes is weak. Lowering body fat, improving head posture and shaping a beard usually do far more for how your jaw looks.

Does confidence really matter?

How you carry yourself changes how people read you. Posture, eye contact and a relaxed face are skills you can practise.
